PATTERNS

 “Y” Not Lace Socks

Materials:

YARN: 

approximately 400 yards of fingering/sock weight 

NEEDLES:  

Size US 1, or size to make gauge 1 40” circular, double points or

two  24”circulars (or one 24” and one 16”)


Stitch markers

Yarn needle for Kitchener Stitch

Gauge:     

8 stitches = 1”


Size: 

​Woman’s small and medium


Cuff:  Cast on 60 (64) stitches with a stretchy cast on (like long tail cast on, or knitted cast on) 
          Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist stitches
        *Cuff is worked in k2, p2 ribbing* Work the 2x2 rib pattern for 1 ¼” - 1 ½ “
 
Leg:  Pattern:    Round 1:  (K2, p2) around
          Round 2:  (ssk, yo, p2), around
          Round 3:  (k2, p2) around
          Round 4:  (yo,k2tog, p2) around

Work rows of pattern until total measurement from start of cuff is 5”-6” or desired  length, ending with completed row 4.


Heel flap:  Is worked on ½ of the total number of stitches sock 30 (32)


Pattern for heel flap:    Row 1:  (sl1, k1) across
            Row 2:  sl1, purl across
            Row 3:  (sl1, k1) across
            Row 4:  sl1, purl across  
Repeat pattern a total of 8 times, ending with a purl row.  (32 rows)  always check for the
                      most comfortable heel flap length for your foot.


Heel turn:  Row 1: Sl1, k16 (17), ssk, k1, turn
                   Row 2:  Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn
                   Row 3:  sl1, k to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk (over gap) k1, turn
                   Row 4:  sl1, p to 1 stitch before the gap, p2 tog, p1, turn
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked, (18 stitches left)


Gusset:  Picking up stitches

Knit across the 18 stitches placing a marker after 9 stitches. This will be the new start of round.
Pick up and knit 16 stitches along the left side of the heel flap. Then pick up one or two to at the corner to avoid a hole.
Moving to the instep stitches, work in pattern, starting with row 1 of pattern.  Work across the instep.
Pick up and knit one stitch at the corner, to avoid a hole, then pu 16 stitches along right side 
Now knit back to BOR marker.   


Gusset decreases:  

Round 1:  Knit to last 3 stitches of heel, k2tog, k1.  Knit insteps in pattern, k1, ssk, knit to marker.
Round 2:  Knit even
Continue these two rounds until there are 60 (64) stitches left.  (30 (32) on heel and 30 (32) on instep.
Knit even (continuing with instep lace pattern) until you reach 2” short of total length of foot.  (try sock on if it is for you, measure the end of the sock to the end of your longest toe)


Toe:  Work one more round, knitting the instep plain, without pattern.  


Decreases:  
Round 1: (Heel side), k to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1, (instep side)  k1, ssk, k to last 3 stitches of 

                Instep side, (heel side) k1, ssk,. K to marker
      
Round 2:  Knit all stitches, even
Continue to work these rounds until there are 20 stitches left on each sock, 10 stitches on the heel side, 10 stitches on the instep side.


Graft toe closed with Kitchener stitch.


Abbreviations:
BOR -  beginning of round
ssk – slip 2 stitches separately knit wise, knit them together through the back loop
sl1 –slip 1 stitch purl wise with yarn in back
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
yo – yarn over
